This is a medicine — GSL (general sale). Always read the patient information leaflet before use, and ask a pharmacist whether it’s right for you — especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, buying for a child, or use other treatments.
What it is

A medicated antifungal shampoo containing ketoconazole. The patient leaflet says it is used to treat and prevent dandruff and the dry or greasy scaling of the scalp known as seborrhoeic dermatitis, by targeting Malassezia yeasts on the skin.

Key ingredients

Ketoconazole 2% w/w (20 mg ketoconazole per 1 g)

As stated by the manufacturer (see sources below). Formulas and specifications can change — check the pack or listing.

How to use

Adults and adolescents over 12: wet hair, apply a small amount to the scalp, massage into a lather, leave for 3–5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. For dandruff, use every 3 or 4 days for 2–4 weeks; to help stop dandruff returning, use once every 1–2 weeks. Use your usual shampoo for any other washes in between.

Cautions

Not for children under 12. Do not use if you have had a bad reaction to any ingredient. If it gets into the eyes, bathe them gently with water. Contains sodium lauryl ether sulphate, which may cause stinging or burning or increase reactions to other products used on the same area. If you have been using a steroid lotion or cream on your scalp, reduce it gradually over 2–3 weeks as you start this shampoo. See a doctor or pharmacist if the scalp has not cleared within 4 weeks. Possible side effects include scalp irritation, dryness and changes in hair texture.
