Conditioners coat the hair to make it smoother and easier to detangle, which reduces breakage from combing. Masks are richer, leave-on-for-longer versions. Apply them to the mid-lengths and ends rather than the scalp.

What to look for

  • Weight — light formulas for fine or oily hair; richer ones for thick, curly, coily or bleached hair.
  • Detangling — slip matters most if your hair tangles easily.
  • Your scalp — keep heavy conditioners off the roots if you're prone to greasiness or flakes.
