Curly hair (type 3) forms full loops and ringlets. Under the microscope, curlier hairs tend to have a more oval cross-section than straight ones. Dermatologists' advice for curly hair centres on moisture and gentle handling: condition the full length, and comb only while hair is damp, with a wide-tooth comb.

Care priorities

  • Wash less often if your scalp allows, shampooing the scalp only.
  • Condition generously through the lengths, and use leave-in products during wet combing (a hair-science review notes they suit curly hair better than straight).
  • Detangle wet, with conditioner and a wide-tooth comb, from the ends up.
  • Low heat, and protectant if you blow-dry or straighten.
  • Loose styles: tight buns and ponytails pull on curly hair too.

The patterns

  • 3A: Big, loose loops.
  • 3B: Springy, medium-sized ringlets.
  • 3C: Tight, densely packed corkscrews.

Care basics

Washing

Shampoo when needed rather than daily — the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that dry or curly hair may only need washing every week or two (at least every 2 to 3 weeks). Focus shampoo on the scalp.

Conditioning

Condition through the full length after every wash and detangle in the shower with conditioner still in, using a wide-tooth comb.

Styling

Apply leave-in and curl products to wet hair; diffuse on low heat or air-dry, and keep heat styling occasional.

Night-time

Try a loose "pineapple" ponytail on top of the head or a loose silk or satin bonnet or scarf; avoid sleeping in rollers or tight styles.
